Former referee addresses Cape Town Spurs' controversial red card

Former referee Victor Hlungwani has issued his verdict on the controversial red card received by Cape Town Spurs striker Ashley Cupido in a PSL promotion playoff clash against Casric Stars that could prove costly.

Cape Town Spurs made it three wins from three with a narrow 1-0 win against Casric Stars on Wednesday to go top of the standings.

The clash was not without controversy as Spurs striker Cupido was shown a straight red following an altercation with Stars' Ngoanamello Rammala.

"Some people are complaining, asking what he [Cupudo] did. The player is kicked clearly, but let's see what the player does. He is now using abusive language," Hlungwane said on SoccerZone.

"There's an f-word that was used by this player when he was tackled, and the referee was close by to hear the f-word. That was the correct decision by the referee to give a red card to players that don't respect the laws of the game.

"The law says using abusive language or offensive language [is prohibited]."

The Urban Warriors will draw confidence from their 100% record going into the final fixture on Wednesday with a draw or win avoid needed to secure a spot in DStv Premiership.

Opponents Maritzburg United are also confident of their  own chances with two wins from three and will aim to make use of home-ground advantage at Harry Gwala Stadium.

The match will kick off at 19:30.
