How Downs missed out on entering world records

Mamelodi Sundowns are in a league of their own in the PSL after reaching 52 league games unbeaten following their recent 1-0 win over Stellenbosch FC. But how do they compare with unbeaten records from across the world?

In the DStv Premiership alone, the last time Sundowns lost a game was back in September 2022 after a 2-1 loss to rivals SuperSport United.

Since then, they have gone on an unbeaten streak which has carried over into the 2023/24 season, where they are seeking to become the first side in the history of South African football to finish the league season without defeat.

Although during their unbeaten run in the league the Tshwane giants have lost a few games in regulation time in other competitions, their run of 52 matches without defeat is quite remarkable.

German champions Bayer Leverkusen broke a 59-year European unbeaten streak record which was previously held by Benfica after clocking 50 games unbeaten following their 2-2 draw against AS Roma in the UEFA Europa semi-final second-leg.

Like Sundowns, Xabi Alonso's men are bidding to become the first side in the history of the Bundesliga to finish the season unbeaten.

As far as world records are concerned, Scottish giants Celtic still hold the record of 66 games without losing between 1915 and 1917.

In second place is Union SG of Belgium, who recorded 60 games undefeated between 1933 and 1935.

Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly sit in third place, as they combined 55 games without losing from 2004 to 2005.

When it comes to national teams, Italy currently hold the world record of 37 games without defeat, recorded between September 2018 and September 2021.

The only difference between these world records and Sundowns is that the teams mentioned above achieved those feats unerringly, without any defeats in all competitions, while The Brazilians' unbeaten record of 52 matches only includes league matches.
