'Our previous coaches were shown the door because...'

With the future of Miguel Cardoso set to be a topical subject following a CAF Champions League exit, the club has been sent reminders about what befell Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi.

Sundowns succumbed to Pyramids FC via a 3-2 aggregate score in the Champions League final at 30 June Stadium on Sunday and with that the hopes of a second star evaporated into thin air.

Naturally, Cardoso, as head coach, faces the barrel of a gun with Mokwena also being let go at the end of last season after a semi-final exit in the competition, despite having won the league.

"The ship sunk yesterday. It's back to square one. At the moment, there is no life at Chloorkop anymore," says a bitterly disappointed Sello 'Page' Mahlangu.

"Yesterday we were not representing our own identity of football, that's what was missing. Remember, every coach has got his own philosophy, and his philosophy was not matching Pyramids in terms of unlocking them.

"We knew from the start they were going to defend with six people, but still we couldn't dominate the ball possession as much as we wanted to. That showed our coach is beginning to have limitations in his tactics.

"Yes, we played, but tactically we were not matching Pyramids," he continues.

Mahlangu believes if Cardoso had been brought in primarily for the FIFA Club World Cup, then he should be let go straight after the global showpiece.

"If he cannot win the Champions League, then he must move aside. Our previous coaches were shown the door because they failed to win this and that, so if it's the culture of the team, then let it continue to show there is continuity.

"The decisions must not be made based on race. We should be consistent in terms of the decisions we are taking. That would be fair to our former coaches that were removed because of not meeting certain mandates.

"When Cardoso was hired, the mandate was clear that he must win the CAF Champions League."
