Hunt makes bold Coach of the Season prediction

Former SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has explained why he is backing Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker for the Coach of the Season award.

With the season drawing to a close, the debate around the PSL awards has reached a fever pitch. Along with the PSL footballer of the season, one of the most coveted accolades will be the Coach of the Season award.

The prestigious honour was awarded to Rulani Mokwena last season, who guided Mamelodi Sundowns to a league title run during which his side tasted defeat just once throughout the season.

Speaking on the MSW, Hunt revealed his pick for the coach of the season award to Stellies head coach Barker.

The Maroons finished third on the Betway Premiership log table with 13 wins and just six defeats from 28 matches - run only bested by league winners Mamelodi Sundowns and second-placed Orlando Pirates.

"Coach of the Season for me? Steve Barker," Hunt said.

"Yep. I guarantee, but no, he won't get it, you know, for whatever reason, you know, whoever does the judgment.

I think [when judging] you've got to look at the situation, you know. I hate saying this, but you've got to look at what is being spent, what is being made. What resources, and I think they have had a great season again.

"To get what they got in the CAF and to be in the cup finals, and you know what happened in the [MTN8] cup final, they should have won that, and to really be up there in the last year or two, I think.

"He is going to lose a few players again now."
