Downs' big decision on Onyango

Denis Onyango woke up on Wednesday feeling the aches of getting his body to recover from the effects of playing consecutive full shifts for the first time this season.

Onyango has kept clean sheets in back-to-back games against Royal AM, with his latest appearance coming on the eve of his 39th birthday.

Playing top-level football for a championship-winning club just a year before turning 40 is a rare occurrence in the game.

It is for that reason that Onyango's achievement is deserving of all the celebrations that it will get on Wednesday from his employers and his family upon arrival at home.

The Ugandan is unmatched in what he has achieved playing his football in South Africa, where he is now completing his 18th season in a row.

Onyango has now won 11 league titles playing in Mzansi.

The legendary keeper adds the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, African Football League, Nedbank Cup (thrice), Telkom Knockout (twice) and MTN8, pushing his total silverware collection to 20.

There is the Nedbank Cup still to play for on June 1.

Beyond that, there is the looming case of the activation of the one-year option on his contract.

The Brazilians will exercise the option on the veteran keeper's deal and keep him as a solid second choice to Ronwen Williams.

Onyango has been on the books of Sundowns since 2011 having arrived while awaiting the issuing of his South African permanent residence that has allowed him to play as a 'local' for all his time at the club.

Interestingly, when his teammate Siyabonga Mabena was born in February 2007, Onyango was already playing in South Africa and just three months way from turning 22.

Onyango is now a year away from joining Andre Arendse, Bruce Grobbelaar, John Moshoeu, Arthur Bartman, Siyabonga Nomvethe, Hans Vonk, Vuyo Mere and Jean Marc-Ithier as the other players who have made appearances for league clubs past their 40th birthdays throughout the PSL era years.
