Downs to offload striker

A lasting solution is being sought by Mamelodi Sundowns for Abubeker Nasir after a difficult three years under contract at the club.

Nasir has not played any football this season while on loan at SuperSport United, where he was de-registered in January due to injury issues.

The Ethiopian made his debut in December 2023 in the colours of Sundowns against Cape Town Spurs and since then injuries have run havoc.

Sundowns signed Nasir in January 2022, but then loaned him to Ethiopian Coffee for six months, after which he came back to make his debut.

Since the start of the 2022/23 season, he has only played 17 games for The Brazilians with a return of four goals.

For all the potential that the 25-year-old has shown, it appears he has stretched the patience of Sundowns, who are moving in planning for next season minus him.

Miguel Cardoso has already identified the foreign players he will need.

The Tshwane giants currently have Marcelo Allende (Chile), Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Arthur Sales (both Brazilian), and Matias Esquivel and Lucas Suarez (both Argentine) as their five players registered as foreigners.

This website has been informed by those in Ethiopia that Sundowns are now pursuing a lasting solution, which could include parting ways.

Nasir still has a running contract with the club, having signed a five-year deal when he joined in 2022.

While he has had injury worries, Nasir started both World Cup qualifying games for Ethiopia during the March break and scored three goals.

The Ethiopian squad selectors have voiced their need to have him playing regular club football as he is needed in the national team.

Last year, he was even called despite not playing for over eight months at Sundowns but was eventually dropped due to fitness issues.
