Sundowns’ squad roll call

The roll call at Mamelodi Sundowns next season could have more names included in the club's squad with seven competitions at stake through a season that will end in the United States of America.

Sundowns will have duties in the DStv Premiership, MTN8, Carling Knockout and the Nedbank Cup on the domestic front presenting them with at least 33 matches to play.

Then on the continent, they will play in both the CAF Champions League and the African Football League, before heading out to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the USA from June 15-July 13.

That is seven competitions to play and at least 40 games if they come stuck in the first round of the MTN8, Carling Knockout, Nedbank Cup, Champions League, AFL and Club World Cup.

The Brazilians could stretch towards 70 on how they fare with a maximum of four games in each of the MTN8 and Carling Knockout, plus five in the Nedbank Cup, 14 in the Champions League, at least six in the AFL and up to seven at the Club World Cup.

This then means Sundowns will need their squad to have enough depth to deal not only with playing the games, but the travelling involved.

Just last season, Rulani Mokwena oversaw 57 games that came with travels of about 105 000km with trips to Casablanca, Cairo, Luanda, Nouadhibou, Dar es Salaam, Tunis, Lubumbashi, and all local destinations with PSL clubs.

Whatever Mokwena had decided to do during the off-season to soak off the demands of his job from the past season, he will know that it will get worse next term with a cross-Atlantic trip to the USA.

The ripple effects of all the matches, travels and injuries will mean a squad with enough depth to carry the weight of the campaign.

After using 42 players last season, Mokwena could find himself needing wider options.

Ronwen Williams, Denis Onyango, Reyaad Pieterse and Jody February all had minutes, while Sanele Tshabalala had to wait on the bench in the goalkeeping department.

Ricardo Goss and Ismail Watenga are other goalkeeping options that were on loan last season.

In defence, Rushine de Reuck, Brian Mandela Onyango, Terrence Mashego, Khuliso Mudau, Mothobi Mvala, Rivaldo Coetzee, Divine Lunga, Zuko Mdunyelwa, Thapelo Morena, Grant Kekana, Mosa Lebusa, Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Aubrey Modiba and Sifiso Ngobeni (who then went on loan at AmaZulu FC) all had minutes.

Onyango is leaving, but Nicholus Lukhubeni, Katlego Mohamme and Bongolwethu Siyasi will be available after spending time out on loan.

Teboho Mokoena led the midfield with Bongani Zungu, Marcelo Allende, Bathusi Aubaas, Sammy Seabi, Thapelo Maseko, Lebohang Maboe, Sipho Mbule, and Sphelele Mkhulise all playing.

Zungu is out, but Siyanda Msani, Luvuyo Phewa and Malebogo Modise will come as options.

Slightly further up the pitch, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Thembinkosi Lorch, Tashreeq Matthews, Lesiba Nku, Gaston Sirino, Junior Mendieta, Themba Zwane, Neo Maema, Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi, Siyanda Nyanga, Keabetswe Ramotsei, Kutlwano Letlhaku and Siyabonga Mabena have all had minutes.

Peter Shalulile, Matias Esquivel, and Abubeker Nasir have played up front and Thabiso Kutumela, Etiosa Ighodaro, Thabang Sibanyoni and Promise Mkhuma will provide further options after returning from their loan spells.

As it stands, Sundowns already have 50+ players on their books before even going into the market for new acquisitions.
