Mokwena’s three more years at Downs…

If what Rulani Mokwena has had to deal with in his first full season as the main man in charge of the dressing room, then he will roll up his sleeves more than he has ever done.

Mokwena has come out of the 2023/24 having taken the strain of a fixture schedule from hell through being swarmed with swords from his critics and facing the torture of his conflict with Sead Ramovic.

The first of four years on his contract, which comes with an annual package believed to be in the region of R7,5 million, has seen Mokwena deliver two of six trophies out of six available to play for in the 2023/24 season.

He won the DStv Premiership and African Football League then lost in the finals of the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, went out in the first round of the Carling KnockOut Cup and then came stuck in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

Next season Sundowns will play in those six competitions and then head out to the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA which will run from June 15 – July 13.

This will make leave seven trophies hanging in his face.

After the Club World Cup, Mokwena will still have another two years remaining on his current contract.

The aim will be to play in all seven competitions every season giving the 37-year-old a range of 21 trophies to take aim at through the three seasons that remain on his contract.

Mokwena's four-year deal – signed in July last year – runs until end of June 2027 and he has promised to deliver the Champions League during that time.

He took over as sole head coach in October 2022 after the club's decision to dismantle the co-coaching role that he had shared with Manqoba Mngqithi.
