Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe has detailed the club's dramatic decision to restructure the first-team technical team with the appointment of Rulani Mokwena as head coach.
Following some unconvincing results this season, including a shock 3-0 loss to Orlando Pirates in the second semi-final leg of the MTN8, the club's hierarchy decided to promote Mokwena to sole head coach, while Steve Komphela moved to first team coach, making way for Manqoba Mnqithi to be senior coach.
"We have had our share of setbacks [this season], and the free-scoring squad of the previous campaign seemed subdued," Motsepe admitted in the latest edition of The Chairman's Letter.
"The club was faced with a difficult decision, to make a change immediately, or hope that eventually, the team would click into gear."
"The decision was made to restructure the leadership of the technical team and allow coach Rulani to assume the position of Head Coach, coach Steve as our First Team Coach, and coach Manqoba as the Senior Coach.
"The repositioning was implemented to allow for greater definition in the technical department and to allow for clarity across the squad."

Since the change, the Brazilians have been in electric form. The first game of Mokwena's reign ended in a 5-0 hammering of Maritzburg United before closing for the FIFA break with a 3-0 win over Royal AM.
Sundowns also flexed their muscles with a 3-0 win over AmaZulu and a 4-0 demolition of Orlando Pirates on their way to winning the Carling Black Label Cup.
"Of course, a restructuring like this will raise questions and concerns, but we have confidence in this decision; and more importantly, we have confidence in all the coaches and their commitment to the vision of the club- which is to be the best team in Africa," added Motsepe.
