Minutes hope for Downs fifth choice?

Mamelodi Sundowns might have the chase of becoming the first ever Invincibles in the DStv Premiership but also have their fifth-choice goalkeeper yearning for minutes.

Sundowns brought their fifth-choice keeper Sanele Tshabalala closer to action on Tuesday by having him on the bench for the first time this season in that 1-1 draw against TS Galaxy.

Tshabalala is now on the books of the champions at the back of having previously been with Bidvest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows and has caps for the national U20 team.

The 26-year-old brings to five the number of keepers at Sundowns, where there is Ronwen Williams, Denis Onyango, Reyaad Pieterse and Jody February, who have all had minutes this season.

With Sundowns having one more dead-rubber league game to play, it leaves Tshabalala as the only keeper waiting for league minutes.

Tshabalala played thrice at Swallows last season after having played twice the previous season, while his game-time count for the 2020/21 season was five.

This means he has played only 10 games throughout all the years he has spent in the DStv Premiership.

The Brazilians have already used 42 players across all competitions this season, with Thando Buthelezi and Musawenkosi Mdluli the other two yet to play.

Sundowns will play Cape Town City on Saturday before being crowned champions for the seventh consecutive season.
