Nomvethe: Stellies to end Downs' record dream

Former South African international Siyabonga Nomvethe has backed Stellenbosch FC to hand Mamelodi Sundowns their first defeat in over 50 league matches on Saturday.

Sundowns, who have already been confirmed DStv Premiership champions and are now waiting to be crowned on 25 May, have three league matches remaining, the most challenging considered to be against Stellenbosch this weekend.

The former renowned striker believes if there is a team capable of preventing The Brazilians from finishing the league without a defeat, it is Stellies.

"Stellenbosch is a good team, they always give Sundowns a tough game, and it might happen that Stellenbosch beat Sundowns because for them to lose for the third time to Sundowns this season will be something else," says Nomvethe, speaking to KickOff.

If Steve Barker's men don't stop Sundowns as they attempt to become the first team to earn the 'Invincibles' title in South African football, at least in the PSL, then no other team will, suggests 'Bhele'.

"Looking back at their recent Nedbank Cup semi-final meeting, that was not an easy game for Sundowns. Remember, Sundowns want to make a new record of finishing the season without having tasted defeat. They are already untouchable as it is now and have already won the championship. They now want to make history," he adds.

"It's time the other teams pull up their socks. The only way to stop Sundowns is for the other teams to sign quality players.

Nomvethe says the Winelands outfit will be a hard nut to crack at Athlone Stadium.

"Stellenbosch is not an easy team to play, they have already dropped three points, and also got a single point against AmaZulu, so in this one, they will be looking to not drop any points as they are fighting for second spot. All of that makes it a tough game for Sundowns.

The 46-year-old concluded by saying that a Sundowns undefeated season would not diminish the quality of South African football.

He praised the Tshwane giants' fitness, squad depth, and their consistent performance in top-tier competitions like the CAF Champions League, which sets them apart from other PSL teams.

The much-anticipated clash at kicks off at 15:00 this Saturday, promising a thrilling encounter.
