According to former referee Victor Hlungwani, Mamelodi Sundowns should have been awarded a penalty during their MTN8 Final defeat to Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

Masandawana lost 3-1 on penalties, following a goalless draw after extra time at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Both sides had several appeals for penalties, with Hlungwani feeling that referee Abongile Tom should have awarded Downs a penalty after Peter Shalulile appeared to have be brought down by Miguel Timm during the first half of extra time.

Here's how the readers reacted to the "'A penalty should have been awarded' - Top ref issues verdict on Downs, Pirates MTN8 Final" story:

"What goes around comes around. I hope they understand," says Dr Mthimkhulu.

"Who cares? We are not Chiefs moss," says Mshefan wa mo Downs.

"We don't care. Sundowns' supporters told us that we must not look for penalties or red cards to beat them. They must also do the same.

"At any rate, they were crying for three penalties, indicating that they just follow Mokoena's theatrics on the sidelines, not soccer," says msanisto.

"I tend to agree that Shalulile's foot was in front of Timm's - that is a fact, but he is not in control of the ball, most importantly he is already falling before Timm touches him, there is no kick there.

"Top referee, he did very well on the day, a player must be fouled, you don't get a penalty by diving," says sibo.mthembu.

"What goes around comes around," says khosilannete0.

"This Hlungwani guy probably listened to Spot-on [Extra-Time TV Show segment] before making his comments later on. He regurgitates exactly what was said on DSTV almost word for word," says Dukwase who added:

"Football is unfair if you are on the receiving end. That's all I am prepared to say."

"Mxm, how many penalties were Sundowns supposed to concede in the semi final? Rulani should have listened carefully after that game. Pirates won, Sundowns can go and drink water," says mduduzimsibi800.

"Timm trips Shalulile, Shalulile goes down, penalty awarded to Sundowns. Shalulile takes the penalty, the score is 1-0 to Sundowns, Abongile Tom ends the match, Sundowns celebrate, with the fans jumping.

"So why are you crying guys? This is what you were telling Chiefs fans," jokes Fair Comment.

"No one is crying here and only Victor Hlungwane is telling you that should be a penalty. Remember Sundowns is guaranteed a Cup every season, unlike other teams, whose players who play for the lives when they are in a final because they don't know when they're going to win another.

"Sundowns won't cry over this loss," says Bhekilekhuleni6.

"Well, they also robbed their way into the final," says Legend CRM083.

Read: Mbele: Anyone can coach Sundowns

Sticking with the Brazilians, former player Papi Mbele says the quality of the Downs squad means anyone can coach the club.

He feels that the reason local teams are struggling to beat Sundowns is because they are playing into their hands, praising Sundowns' style of play.

Mbele is upset that other PSL teams don't bother to plan against Sundowns and says the players at the club are the ones that determine the system.

Here's how the readers reacted to the "Mbele: Anyone can coach Sundowns" story:

"Now because Rulani is doing well, everybody can coach Sundowns. They say money can't buy success. We started winning, they said Downs is killing careers of players. We continued winning with players that were given a chance, now money can buy success because we buy referees.

"We lose with same referee mistakes, 'it's fine Downs can be beaten it's weak'. Eish, we don't know anymore," says ddmashabe who added:

"People are just jealous. Like Mbele, they really lost their minds. When Pitso coached Downs they were saying Rulani is the one who is doing every thing at Downs, not Pitso. Rulani left for Pirates. The story changed with people saying its Mngqithi who is coaching the team.

"Pitso left, they said it's all over, no more Downs dominance. Mngqithi and Rulani took over won a treble. They said it's Pitso's team that wins.

"How many coaches coached you at Sundowns? and what did they win? A wise man once said nothing, unlike you Papi," says thulamda.

"Papi, you played football but which team are you coaching now? None. Why? Because you are just a big mouth but not a coach, while thinking that it takes quality players alone to beat all these well rested teams playing almost twice a week.

"Quality coaches implemented the Downs system, it makes every cow thinking they can fit in and play or coach the team. That's deceit right there. Watch these teams who think they had it all figured it out against Downs, including Mammila," says thabani.dk15.

"Top coaches from Europe failed at Sundowns with quality players. Just because black local coaches are doing well at Sundowns,  doesn't mean anyone can coach the team.

"Pitso did well, Rulani is doing well also. Give credit to our local coaches especially black coaches," says mugwili.

This is nonsense. Having quality players doesn't mean you don't need a good coach. At some point Downs, went 5 years without a trophy while buying top players. It takes a special coach to manage a squad full of stars wena Mbele. No wonder you are not a coach today," says Minwana Phezulu.

"I disagree with you there Papi, it takes someone special to assemble and coach the squad to success, Man City, Real Madrid etc. had good players in the past and failed with different coaches until one special coach came.

"Quality players need an intelligent coach who will design structures, patterns and formations that will answer all the questions the game will throw at them. Sorry Papi, you spoke as if you never played football," says SkyKBY.
