Doc's famous weaponry reborn!

To mark Doctor Khumalo’s 58th birthday, PUMA South Africa is honouring the football legend by re-releasing his iconic footwear. Here's a look!

The Story

PUMA has announced the re-release of Khumalo's legendary 16V boot.

Khumalo famously wore the classic boot during a stellar career that included league titles, domestic cups, and the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

The "16V" nickname stems from fans who likened his high-octane playing style to the Golf GTI 16V, which launched in South Africa the same year he made his club debut in 1987.

Khumalo’s legacy includes 50 caps for Bafana Bafana and a key role in the national team's re-entry onto the international stage. In 1992, he scored the winning penalty against Cameroon in South Africa’s first FIFA-recognised match.

One of his standout performances came in the 1996 Mandela Cup against world champions Brazil — where he assisted a goal, scored another with a brilliant volley, and outshone the famed Brazilian midfield with his trademark flair.

PUMA’s re-release pays tribute to a football icon whose style and skill left a lasting legacy on the beautiful game.

Reacting to the news, Khumalo said: "These boots hold special memories for me, so I am honoured that PUMA has chosen to re-release them to the market..."

"PUMA has a near 40-year relationship with Doc..." added Brett Bellinger, PUMA SA Marketing Director.
