Kaizer Chiefs have moved towards completing a year of no returns from their shock signing of Bongani Sam, who arrived from Orlando Pirates.
Sam was a surprise signing prior to the start of last season and the decision to bring him on board has yielded no returns to date.

Of all the players that arrived last season, he was the only one who ended without any minutes due to non-selection and injury.
This has placed the 27-year-old in an awkward situation of having not played all season for his employers.
Sam also didn’t play in the six months prior to his arrival at Chiefs with his last share of minutes coming in December 2023.
Signed on a three-year deal with an option of a further year, he still has at least two years at Naturena.
This means the option of terminating will come at a cost.
The Soweto giants have already paid him 10 salaries plus signing-on fees since his signing without getting any returns just yet.
That stretches the cost for Chiefs upwards of R1 million.

What made Sam’s signing a surprise was that for all the years he spent at Pirates, he only played from start to finish in seven games, then featured in patches in another 21, before spending loan time at Maritzburg United and Moroka Swallows.
Amakhosi – who are still being constantly linked with a left-back signing – have Bradley Cross, Happy Mashiane, and Edmilson Dove as left-back options.
