Worrying trend at Chiefs raises recruitment questions

Ranga Chivaviro has joined the long list of strikers that have come and gone without success at Kaizer Chiefs in the last dozen years, raising question marks about the club’s recruitment approach and success.

Chivaviro’s goals total in the two years he spent at Chiefs couldn’t get into double figures and the club’s decision to release him comes as no surprise.

With what has happened, questions will be asked about how he came to be signed considering he only had one productive season in the top league when he scored 17 at Marumo Gallants.

The 32-year-old has largely spent his career in the First Division, playing for at least six clubs in that league.

From the transfer business done by the Soweto giants up front, the list of names that haven’t worked out at the club keeps increasing with Christian Saile Basomboli standing on the fence after the end of his loan at SuperSport United.

Just last year, the exit wheels at Naturena swallowed Efmamjjasond Gonzalez after he failed to score a single goal all season.

The year before, it was Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana being pushed out, though he scored eight.

He was accompanied by Khama Billiat, whose time at the club wasn’t as successful as it was expected to be with focus falling more on his earnings.

In the winter of 2022, Lazarous Kambole was the failure of note leaving.

Though Leonardo Castro might want to argue his case, he also left in that window having not genuinely lived up to expectations.

Before him, there was Ryan Moon, Gustavo Paez, Camaldine Abraw, David Zulu, Siphelele Mthembu, Michelle Katsvairo, Bongani Ndulula, Edward Manqele, Lewis Macha, Katlego Mphela, Matthew Rusike, and Sthembiso Ngcobo, who all didn’t have their best days while at the Soweto giants.

Since Knowledge Musona came and conquered only Lehlohonolo Majoro, Samir Nurkovic, and to a certain extent Kingston Nkhatha, did a job that brought results up front.

Nurkovic was in double figures in his first season before his form dropped in the next two, while Nkhatha had eight and then 10 goals in his first two seasons.

Majoro was on double figures in his first two years and then scored none in half-a-season before leaving.

With the options still in Chiefs’ books for the number nine position, it will be no surprise for Tashreeq Morris to be the next one out.

It will be interesting how the club conducts their transfer business in this key position, which has given them headaches in recent times.
