Why Junior Khanye is not a Chiefs legend

Junior Khanye will celebrate his 38th birthday within the next seven days having built a career as a critical analyst whose opinions have left him not a favourite at Kaizer Chiefs.

Khanye did play for Chiefs but did he do enough to earn the tag of being referred to as a legend.

The former youth international's numbers show that he started less than 20 games in two years from the day he made his first team debut at Chiefs and scored just a single goal playing as an attacking midfielder.

For his overall PSL contribution in the top league, Khanye started only 26 games at Chiefs, Silver Stars, and Maritzburg United.

Promoted to the first team as a teenager ahead of the 2003/04 season, Khanye made 19 appearances (15 starts and four subs) in his first season with a return of a single goal scored against Black Leopards on March 6, 2004.

Chiefs won the league and Coca-Cola Cup with Tinashe Nengomasha the best player in the league with Zwane part of that squad.

Besides Nengomasha, the top performers with the most mi utes at Chiefs were Rowen Fernandez, Fabian McCarthy, Patrick Mabedi, Cyril Nzama, and John 'Shoes' Moshoeu while Jabu Pule was also influential with limited minutes.

Khanye didn't play in the 2003 Coca-Cola final win over Silver Stars.

The next season (2004/05) Khanye started three games (plus 10 substitute appearances) and ended without a goal.

Chiefs won the league and Coca-Cola again with Collins Mbesuma the top performer.

Khanye also didn't play in that Coca-Cola final against Pitso Mosimane's SuperSport United played at Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein won 1-0 by AmaKhosi courtesy of Collins Mbesuma's late strike.

The only cup final appearance made by Khanye was in the 2004 SAA Suap8 defeat to SuperSport at the ABSA Stadium in Durban when he was brought on to replace Scara Ngobese after 53 minutes.

All his five appearances in cup games from that season were as a substitute.

In the league, Khanye also made another five appearances from the bench and didn't play 90 minutes in all his three starts for the season.

The cold facts about Junior Khanye show that he on

With his off-field matters affecting his performance on the pitch, he was then loaned out to the then HP Silver Stars for the 2005/06 season.

This meant in the two years that he spent in the first team at Chiefs as a teenager he started 18 games (plus 14 subs) scoring once playing as an attacking midfielder.

At Silver Stars, he started six games (plus seven subs) scoring once before he was offloaded before he turned 21 in June 2006.

Through the 2006/07 season, he surfaced at FC AK in the first division but played just twice before disappearing through the next campaign.

At the start of the 2008/09 season, he found his way to Maritzburg United after they had been promoted in the hope that Gordon Igesund would revive his career.

However, after two starts (plus 13 subs) he was released with his career in the PSL done before he turned 24.

He then made nine appearances at United FC in the first division during the 2009/10 season before moving up to 18 appearances at the same club the next season scoring a goal in the 2011 Nedbank Cup against Orlando Pirates.

He then left for Eswatini before as his career fizzled out in his 20s before surfacing as a controversial pundit.
