‘The situation at Chiefs puts him at a disadvantage’

With the monkey off his back, Ranga Chivaviro has been told to keep his head as he negotiates his way through a difficult first season at Kaizer Chiefs.

Chivaviro finally scored his first goal for Chiefs in his ninth appearance which came against Cape Town Spurs.

With 10 appearances equating 450 minutes, Chivaviro is sitting on a single goal which is not the kind of start that he would have hoped for when he joined from Marumo Gallants on a two-year deal with an option for a third.

"Is Ranga getting balls in the box for him to be expected to be scoring goals?" questions Themba Mafu, the chairman-cum-director of Witbank Spurs, the first division club where Chivaviro got his professional break 10 years ago.

Notable is that Chivaviro scored 17 goals in 30 appearances last season.

"Ranga ends up coming deeper for him to play so I hope that this improves for the benefit of the team.

"As a striker Ranga is expected to deliver goals but there is a process to that we should also consider instead of just bashing him.

"The situation at the club now is such that it puts him at a disadvantage because the team is not doing well.

"I hope that when Cavin Johnson talks about winning games the Kaizer Chiefs it will start happening soon because I know that once they get to that stage, they will start creating enough chances for their strikers to score.

"The scoring ratio will improve if the whole team is doing well.

"It is also unfortunate that Ranga joined the club when the team was not doing well.

"So, this obviously has ripple effects on individual players.

"There is not this and that about the situation at Chiefs because the results are clear.

"The synchronisation that you now see at Sundowns takes a lot of time and commitment.

"It is only Sundowns that has that because they are now semi-automized from having played together for a long time.

"So, let us be understanding of the process happening at Chiefs before we crucify individuals.

"The plus is that I don't see it being worse than it is so it can only get better for players like Ranga and I'm happy that Cavin Johnson is an experienced coach," says Mafu.
