Story Behind My Nickname: Smiley

In this edition of Story Behind My Nickname, KickOff catches up with former Kaizer Chiefs defender Mokete Tsotetsi about his nickname "Smiley".

Who and where did you play?

"From my Kasi, I went to Bidvest Wits development, and from there I joined FC Sporting in the first division.

"That's where Jomo Sono recruited me for Jomo Cosmos.

"He sent Mbazo (Aaron Mokoena) to convince me to come to his club. We were in the national team camp when that happened."

What's your nickname?

"Smiley"

Who gave it to you and why?

"My teammate at Kaizer Chiefs Cyril Nzama is the one who gave me the name.

"He thought it suited me very well since I was forever smiling during matches.

"No matter how difficult a match was, I always smiled.

"No matter how much you hurt me, I don't know how to get upset. I just smile and let you be."

Did you like it?

"I didn't have much of a choice. Even in my neighbourhood people started calling me Smiley.

"As a sportsman, I believe you should play with a smile on your face, you can't play with a serious face."

Anyone that didn't use it?

"Everyone at Chiefs was calling me Smiley because of Cyril (laughs)."

If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?

"I was a big fan of Lucas Radebe. Remember most of the time you are given a name according to the way you play or act.

"That is why you see the current PSL not having nicknames. So, if I were to relive it, I'd call myself Rhoo."
