Defining season for Chiefs attacking trio

When the bell marking the start of the new season rings in under a month, Kaizer Chiefs will have the usual focus thrown at them following the appointment of Nasreddine Nabi.

Beyond that, they will be expected to deliver better performances than what was witnessed in last season's bloodbath under Cavin Johnson.

This will mean the need to win matches and score goals with plenty of that responsibility falling on the shoulders of Ranga Chivaviro, Christian Saile Basomboli and Ashley Du Preez.

There will be no excuses from this trio not to deliver.

Chivaviro is into his second season at Chiefs and needs to do better than score four goals playing as a number nine.

What is needed is what he did at Marumo Gallants, where he netted 17, earning him that dream move following years of toiling in the First Division.

So far, he has averaged a goal with every 270 minutes that he has played at Amakhosi, which needs improvement if the optional year on his contract is to be activated.

Saile is in no better standing as he prepares for his second full season.

The Congolese scored a mere four goals in 34 games.

If it was minutes that he needed, then he got them in abundance in his first season, totalling 1779 minutes.

This meant he scored one goal with every 445 minutes that he played being employed mostly from wide areas, though he did play as centre-forward.

With Du Preez, he scored six last term from 27 appearances in what was his second year at the club after joining from Stellenbosch FC.

In his first season, he had an encouraging return of nine goals plus five assists.

So far from two years at Chiefs, it gives the 27-year-old a total of 15 goals, but what dilutes all of this is how wasteful he tends to be, which has contributed to his failure to reach double figures in a single campaign.

Last season's six goals came at a rate of a goal in every 338 minutes, which needs to be improved.
