New commenting system for KickOff.com

Reading the comments on the stories we publish on snl24.com/kickoff is one of our favourite pastimes, and you often crack us up with your wit or impress us with your knowledge of the game.

But, as in life, some people are out there to spoil the party for everyone else.

We receive a lot of complaints from site users about certain commenters, and we do a lot of deleting of comments, but controlling the ‘unsavoury elements’ alone would be a full-time job.

Because of this we are implementing the Livefyre commenting system, which has seen a lot of success on some big websites internationally.

We are rolling out the new system today, so give it a try and let us know what you think.

We are expecting a lot of you to shy away from the new system at first, but we believe ultimately the more intelligent and entertaining debate will be able to come to the fore.

  • Type your comment in the comment box below the story.
  • Now you have the option to comment with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or sign up with Livefyre and create a profile there. Click one of the options (red buttons) and fill in your details.
  • Once your comment is posted, mouse over (ie place your mouse curser on your profile picture without clicking), and a box will pop up. Click on ‘view full profile’ to see your account.
  • Click on ‘account’ at the top of the page and then ‘settings’ to view your personal details, adjust email notifications, or connect with other social networks.
  • Click on ‘account’ at the top of the page and then ‘view profile’ to see your comment history as well as the number of likes you have given and received.
  • You will be able to see other members profiles as well.
  • Alternatively, to view your profile, mouse over your name as it appears above the comment box.
  • With Livefyre’s friend tagging feature, you can post your thoughts on an article and invite your friends on Twitter and Facebook right from Livefyre’s commenting system.
  • Should you find a particularly profound or funny comment (we encourage both, assuming you obey the rules), posting it on social networks is merely a click away.

You can now reply to individual comments, which is a pretty cool feature similar to what you see on Facebook.

You can also ‘like’ comments you think are adding to debate.

Clicking this button will subscribe you to the thread, ie you will be updated when new comments are made.

You can now choose to sort comments by newest OR oldest, which is a feature a lot of readers were asking for.

If you hover over the time-stamp, you’ll reveal a few options: delete your comment, “flag” others' comments as Offensive, Spam, Off-topic, or Disagree, and share any comment to Facebook and Twitter or get the permalink to the comment.
