In the latest edition of Negotiating Behind the Scenes, former Kaizer Chiefs striker David Zulu reveals how his 2015 move to Naturena materialised.
Zulu impressed at Chippa United and received a national team call-up before Amakhosi showed an interest.
The retired 37-year-old lifted the Premier Soccer League title in his first season with the Glamour Boys.
Who I signed for
"I signed for Chiefs in January 2015. I can't even describe the feeling; I was so happy. That was the phone call that changed my day altogether. I was filled with happiness."
How did you find out?
"I got a call from Chippa Mpengesi very early in the morning. He said to me, we are not going to stand in your path, you are going to be the first player to come out of Chippa United to join a big club and at the same time play for the national team."
Where did you meet?
"We met at the Kaizer Chiefs Village. That's where we completed our negotiations."
Who was there?
"It was Bobby Motaung, the chairman, myself, my representative and Chippa Mpengesi.
"Everyone was happy in that office that day. Remember I was a hot property those days I was doing well."
What surprised you?
"Nothing really because I had expected professionalism from such a big. I even told my representatives not to be too demanding because the only thing I wanted was to play for Chiefs."
Did you get what you wanted?
"I got everything. I just wanted to get a better salary than the one I was getting at Chippa (laughs)."
Did you see out the contract?
"I signed a two-and-a-half-year contract. The following season coach Steve Komphela joined us, and I couldn't get game time. There were also loan stints in between."
What you would change?
"I should have signed for three-and-? a-half seasons, and I should have turned down the loan proposal and did my rehab in Naturena instead.
"While I was on loan things were not easy for me because the PSL club facilities were not the same. I would have recovered from that knee injury if I had done my rehab at Chiefs."
