Unfortunate developments for Chiefs midfielder

Venezuelan international Edson Castillo’s name has fallen under discussion at Kaizer Chiefs with signals pointing to a departure.

Castillo has spent two years at Chiefs, doing a decent job in midfield, though injury left him with limitations last season.

The 31-year-old fractured his fibula in October last year during a league match against SuperSport United and after his return in March only played 64 minutes spread over four appearances.

Strangely, this didn’t discount him getting a late call-up to the Venezuela national team for 2026 FIFA World Cup CONMEBOL qualifiers against Bolivia and Uruguay during the recent international dates.

Unfortunate for him now at Chiefs is that he is suddenly in a situation of uncertainty.

While the club exercised the option of a further year on his contract three months ago, he is suddenly on the waiting list for exits as he is not a priority in Nasreddine Nabi’s foreign quota.

Nabi needs the foreign spaces to make signings of his choice for the new season, with the Soweto giants heading into the CAF Confederation Cup with intentions to compete.

Only Glody Makabi Lilepo and Inacio Miguel are guaranteed of their places as foreign players, with Fiacre Ntwari also on the edge.

If Nabi gets his way with the players he has targeted, then Castillo must leave, and these discussions are already underway.

There will be an option to play back home in Venezuela, but for that to happen he must be free.

This will mean Chiefs terminating and paying a settlement.

Alternatively, he will have to move on loan – terms of which will have to be negotiated.

Information gathered in recent days also suggests there have been discussions to consider moving back to other Latin America countries.

Castillo is still back home, which points to the likelihood he will not be involved in the club’s pre-season camp in Holland.
