Legendary take: 'Ntwari needs to play well in his first few games'

Kaizer Chiefs' legendary former goalkeeper William "Cool Cat" Shongwe has issued free advice to the club's new goal minder Fiacre Ntwari.

Ntwari, who has joined Amakhosi from TS Galaxy, is viewed by many as a direct replacement for the club's fan-favorite Itumeleng Khune.

"It's difficult to compare Itumeleng Khune with other goalkeepers, anybody who attempts to replace him must know what they are up against," Shongwe tells KickOff.

"Khune has created a legacy of his own over the years, so [for] anybody that might try to emulate him, it might be challenging.

"The comparison is difficult because Khune is a higher achiever, he's done so much, anybody that will come as his replacement will come under a lot of scrutiny.

"But what I've seen of Ntwari I've been very impressed I must add. But playing for TS Galaxy, when it comes to the demands of the game, it's not the same as the pressure that comes with playing for Kaizer Chiefs.

"TS Galaxy doesn't have the masses that pressurizes players, but as far as his ability, Ntwari has what it takes.

"You see when a goalkeeper plays for a small team, a team that has a lesser profile than Chiefs and gets the Man of the Match award week in and week out, it means they have raised their hand. But now comes the extended pressure of playing for the mighty Amakhosi. That's the only part where I'm not too sure.

"But when it comes to the situation of being No.1 for the national team where he plays high-profile games like the qualifiers and all that, that tells a lot about where he comes from," he adds.

Shongwe adds that Ntwari might need a little bit of time to settle in at Naturena.

"But whether he has enough of it I'm not too sure because it's the start that gives you a way forward. He has to hit the ground running so that he don't have the backlog of pressure. He would have done himself a great favour by winning the hearts of the fans if he started well.

"The fans might be problematic, they are the ones that decide if you can get to the other end of the river.

"I didn't start too great at Kaizer Chiefs, but I had a few good games at the early stages that gave Chiefs fans hope.

"I remember in one particular game, in the quarterfinals of the JPS against Mamelodi Sundowns, and they were high-flying, but I managed to keep a clean sheet and we won 1-0.

"I might have faltered after that against AmaZulu, I remember we lost that game at Ellis Park 3-1, then we went on to lose again 5-1 against the same AmaZulu away.

"That could have killed me, but because of what people might have seen in my first few games, [it] enabled me some time to continue. So, Ntwari needs to play well in his first few games to do himself a favour because the Chiefs fans are not very forgiving.

"They just want to see what you've got, you can't be poor from the onset. That's all he needs. But when it comes to quality, I like what I've seen. He needs to get the backing of the management and the fans.

"Listen, I have seen him, I watch games, I do games [for SuperSport] and there's a great quality in there. He is a national team goalkeeper, so it's not like he comes from nowhere. He comes with quality."
