Chiefs handed third straight loss on Dutch tour

Kaizer Chiefs remain winless on their pre-season tour of the Netherlands following a 1-0 loss to NEC Nijmegen on Saturday afternoon.

Chiefs gave starts to Zitha Kwinika, Reeve Frosler, Gaston Sirino, Samkelo Zwane, George Matlou, Pule Mmodi, Tashreeq Morris and Mfundo Vilakazi.

After a drubbing from FC Utrecht, the Amakhosi looked to bounce back, although they were required to make a goal-line clearance earlier on as NEC threatened an early lead.

NEC launched another scare around the half-hour mark and saw Tjaronn Chery drag his effort wide of the near post following a knockdown inside the area.

The Amakhosi were able to stage a few moments as the first period headed to a close and had Sirino come close from a tight angle, but he was denied.

Chiefs continued to show courage defensively and on the ball in the second period as the Dutch outfit eagerly looked to find the breakthrough.

Wholesale changes from the Amakhosi followed before the hour mark, as goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma, Aiden McCarthy, Thabo Cele, Nkanyiso Shinga, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Glodly Lilepo were brought on.

The home team regained momentum and hit the front in the closing stages through a calmly taken finish into the bottom-corner from the edge of the area by Koki Ogawa.

Chiefs almost levelled matters ten minutes from time as Cele unleashed a fierce shot from way out, but it was comfortably smothered.

Yet another opening came the way of the Soweto giants within the last few minutes, but development graduate Thulani Mabaso fluffed his lines having latched onto a through pass, as Chiefs were condemned to a third loss in pre-season.
