Lifeline for Chiefs defender?

Kaizer Chiefs are understood to have made a bold call on the immediate future of at least one out-of-favour star ahead of the new season.

The Soweto giants have begun a clear out of the squad ahead of the new season headlined by Ranga Chivavaro, Sabelo Radebe, Njabulo Blom, Edmilson Dove and most recently Mduduzi Mdantsane.

With more exits still expected before Amakhosi embark on their pre-season tour to the Netherlands, Zitha Kwinika is believed to the among those who have survived the chop.

The 31-year-old was previously believed to be on the way out, having made just six appearances last season and seemingly not a part of head coach Nasreddine Nabi's plans.

However, with a return to continental football on the horizon and with last season's injury crisis in mind, Amakhosi are now understood to have decided to keep Kwinika ahead of what promises to be a testing campaign.

After all, the centre-back provided valuable cover when Rushwin Dortley and Given Msimango suffered injuries, while Inacio Miguel served his suspension over accumulated yellow cards towards the end of last season.

Meanwhile, Chiefs are understood to still be expecting more arrivals, including the addition of a centre-back before the start of the new season.
