Banks Setlhodi: Chiefs goalkeepers lack 'isithunzi'

Kaizer Chiefs legend Joseph 'Banks' Setlhodi is not happy with what the club has in their goalkeeping department at the moment.

Amakhosi new signing Fiacre Ntwari had a bad weekend against Benin conceding three goals in their 3-0 defeat in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, while Bruce Bvuma saved two penalties against a Marumo Gallants team that hardly had a shot on target in the Cufa Cup on Sunday, to help Chiefs win their first trophy since 2015.

Though Bvuma often shines against smaller teams, there have been concerns in the fraternity that he lacks big-match temperament.

Chiefs coach Nabi could likely have a keeper selection headache ahead of the Carling Knockout encounter against SuperSport United.

The Rwandan has so far conceded 4 goals in his three Premiership appearances for the Chiefs.

"These two goalkeepers are not consistent, that is the problem," Sethlodi tells KickOff.

"To be a good goalkeeper you need to be consistent like Ronwen Williams. A goalkeeper shouldn't concede in every game.

"It's hard for me to say which goalkeeper is better between the two because they are both not consistent. It's the first time in the history of Kaizer Chiefs they don't have a consistent goalkeeper.

"We were winning cups and league titles because we always had good goalkeepers. Goalkeepers are the reason best teams all over the world win cups.

"These two are not yet up to the required level of being a Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper; the club still needs to get out there and get a good goalkeeper," the legend added.

"I'm not yet impressed with Ntwari, there's no room for a slow start or time to adapt for a goalkeeper. We hit the ground running. That's a very important position on the field, it has no room for error.

"A goalkeeper must motivate the team, your backline must do as you say. You don't just catch obvious balls.

"As for Bvuma... Eish, these goalkeepers are average man, they are not on top. They are not at the level of Ronwen Williams. Unesithunzi u Williams you can feel his presence.

"But the likes of Bvuma they don't have that. He lacks that thing. When Itumeleng Khune is in goals kuba nesithunzi. Chiefs are currently lacking in that department; the keepers they have there don't talk to their backline.

"Most former goalkeepers are coaches today because they used to talk to their teammates when they were still active. A goalkeeper is not just there to stop the shots.

"As a goalkeeper, you should be able to react. You must know which of your defenders doesn't have pace, and which one is not a good jumper.
