5 positives for Chiefs ahead of Soweto Derby

Following Kaizer Chiefs' thumping win over Free Agents FC in the Nedbank Cup, KickOff highlights five positives ahead of the Soweto Derby against neighbours Orlando Pirates.

Monkey off Chivaviro's back?

Strikers get their confidence from finding the back of the net, no matter the opposition, and Ranga Chivaviro scoring his fifth goal of the season against Free Agents will lift his confidence, especially in a game played with the heart.

The former Marumo Gallants forward had last scored in mid-December in a 1-1 league draw against TS Galaxy.

Return of Sirino

Chiefs struggled in front of goal without Gaston Sirino, who missed six consecutive Betway Premiership games due to injury.

He made his return after coming on at half-time for Nkosingiphile Ngcobo in a 4-0 win over Free Agents.

Mmodi removes Chiefs blushes in front of goal

Pule Mmodi showed good composure in front of goal, something Amakhosi have lacked, after scoring a brace on Sunday.

With Wandile Duba a doubt ahead of the Soweto Derby after he was stretchered off with injury, the ex-Golden Arrows man could be one of the trusted solutions to make a difference where it matters most.

No suspensions

The Naturena-based side entered the game against Free Agents with four players - Yusuf Maart, Samkelo Zwane, Njabulo Blom and Mduduzi Shabalala - on three yellow cards, and all were at risk of missing Saturday's showdown.

However, none of the quartet got booked, although Zwane and Blom were not risked, as they were unused substitutes, while Shabalala was not in the squad.

Triple signing confidence boost

Chiefs have announced the signings of Tashreeq Morris, Makabi Glody Lilepo and Thabo Cele.

The derby comes at the right time for Morris, who was suspended in the previous two matchdays, after his red card in SuperSport United's 3-0 defeat to Sekhukhune United, and is now available for selection.

Cele has already played 14 games for his former Russian side Fakel Voronezh this season but last played in early November.

Lilepo's match fitness should not be an issue, as he last played two weeks ago for Valenciennes, although it remains to be seen if he will get his work permit in time.

Regardless of whether they play or not, the three signings come as a major confidence booster for Nasreddine Nabi's squad, who were in desperate need of upgrades.
