Fluminense star denies Onyango CWC milestone

One of Fluminense's standout stars at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup has denied Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango a special milestone at the tournament.

Fluminense have been one of the surprise packages at the newly expanded competition, with the Brazilian giants pulling off a spectacular victory over 2024/25 UEFA Champions League finalists Inter Milan to reach the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.

Among their standout performers has been their number one goalkeeper, Fabio, who has already kept three clean sheets from four matches.

Incredibly, Fabio is 44 years old, making him the oldest player to feature at the current tournament.

Notably, Fabio and his teammate Thiago Silva are the only players at the ongoing Club World Cup who are older than the 40-year-old Onyango.

The Ugandan legend, unfortunately, did not make a single appearance at the showpiece event in the United States, where he would have made history as the oldest African to play at the Club World Cup.

One milestone Onyango did secure, however, is the distinction of being the only Sundowns player to participate in two Club World Cups with the team.

Onyango's longevity has now seen him become one of the most experienced players to be included in the first 32-team edition of the Club World Cup.
