Arendse was in goal when Bafana beat Tunisia 2-0 at FNB Stadium 21 years ago, while Tinkler was in midfield for Clive Barker’s side.
Arendse, who is now the goalkeeper coach at SuperSport, says being part of SuperSport’s journey to the CAF Confederation Cup final feels like 1996 all over again despite the fact that he is now a member of a technical team and not a player.
Another member on the technical team who deserves credit is assistant coach Kaitano Tembo, who Matsatsantsa through the group stages when Stuart Baxter was juggle both SuperSport and Bafana coaching duties.
SuperSport face TP Mazembe in the second leg encounter at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night, after going down 2-1 in the first leg played in Lubumbashi five days ago. It’s a big one on home soil, so SuperSport need to hold their nerve just like the group of Bafana players did in 1996 in front of a packed crowd.
"If you want to win games like this you need to have a hardcore mentality. We have to try give the players that one last push. Home ground advantage is always a bonus and we proved that in 1996. We saw it in Mazembe when those fans packed the stadium to support their team. That’s a big plus and we need that on Saturday. We are not saying we cannot do it without supporters, but it’s a massive help.
"It will be nice to lift the trophy in front of the home fans."
