SuperSport United's Thuso Phala gears up for Confederation Cup final with TP Mazembe

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns player has tons of medals from cup competitions he has won throughout his career, and now has an opportunity to join an elite group of players who have had the honour of lifting a continental trophy.

Matsatsantsa are away from home in the first leg at Lubumbashi on Sunday. The return leg will be played six days later at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

"For me personally this is the biggest final I have ever had to play. Sometimes finals like this come once in your life, so we are aware of that and we want to write history for the club and the country. We are looking forward and it’s an opportunity I would like to grab," Phala said.

SuperSport have done well away from home throughout the competition, getting impressive results against teams such as Mazembe, CF Mounana, Zesco United and Club Africain.

They believe they can get a good result in Lubumbashi to bring back home for the return leg.

"In every away game we have done well. The experience we have in the team has helped us in the CAF journey," Phala said.

It says a lot about the strength of the SuperSport side that they have had three coaches – Stuart Baxter, Kaitano Tembo and Eric Tinkler – in the competition and they have come this far. Usually coaches have to settle in and that might affect the results, but Matsatsantsa have kept going.

"The foundation has been strong since coach Stuart left. Luckily we have a coach who did not change much when he came. It’s about giving us positive energy and confidence. Our mental toughness has showed in this competition," Phala said.
