SuperSport United goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse brushes off suggestions he is a penalty specialist

The 25-year-old shot-stopper was in fine form when he saved yet another penalty - this time from CF Mounana’s Djamilo Atchabao during their 5-3 CAF Confederation Cup victory at the Stade d'Angondje on Tuesday.

Goals from Grant Kekana, followed by braces by both Thabo Mnyamane and Jeremy Brockie sealed the South Africans’ first win of the competition and moved them to the top of Group D.

Pieterse also kept out two penalties during their Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash against his former employers, Kaizer Chiefs.

He has also managed this feat for Bafana Bafana during last year’s COSAFA Cup when they beat Lesotho 4-2 on penalties.

Pieterse, however, maintains he’s no spot-kick specialist.

“No, not at all. I wouldn’t say that I’m a penalty specialist,” Pieterse tells snl24.com/kickoff.

“I think it’s all about your luck on the day. I’m aware that I had a few of those days but I’m no specialist. I believe if you do your best then God will do the rest."

Pieterse went on to say that Tuesday's Gabonese opponents were lucky to escape without a more severe beating.

“I think we made life difficult for ourselves. We made too many mistakes and we gave them too much space. This allowed them to stay in the match. But these are mistakes we can rectify going forward,” he explained.

Despite the Matsatsantsa’s shortcomings during this season’s Absa Premiership campaign, Pieterse is adamant they can still finish on a positive note.

“We can rewrite the history books by defending our Nedbank Cup title against Pirates. But we know it won’t be easy as they also have intentions of winning silverware," he stated.

“We are also pushing in the Confederation Cup to see how far we can go. But we’ll take it one game at a time. Looking back I think our whole technical team deserves credit for where we are right now."
