SuperSport United defender Tefu Mashamaite itching to lift Confederation Cup

The 33-year-old centre back is set to start both legs of the final against defending champions TP Mazembe, starting on Sunday in Lubumbashi, in the absence of the suspended Morgan Gould.

With the experience he has gained throughout his career, Mashamaite is not likely to be fazed by the challenge of coming in for someone who has been a top performer for Matsatsantsa in the last year or so.

Mashamaite has won all but the Telkom Knockout in the PSL and is now looking to add the Confederation Cup title to his many achievements in what has been a successful career for the former Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs captain.

Mashamaite, who has previously played in the Confederation Cup with Chiefs, will operate in central defence alongside Clayton Daniels.

“As an individual I think it will be the highest [achievement]. I have never been to the level where we are at with SuperSport, a continental final,” says Mashamaite.

“It’s a big one. I have been with Bafana Bafana before, but I have never been to this stage, so it’s something to look forward to, history in the making. It’s been a great journey, starting in Madagascar right up to here. So we need to take from the confidence we have built.”

Mashamaite knows that his experience will count for nothing if he cannot deliver on the day for Matsatsantsa.

“Experience is a factor. Experience is something you can add onto your game, but first you have to be part of the team. You have to be positive and be present on the day. We are looking forward to it. It’s another final, so we have to be positive.”
