SuperSport United defender Siyabonga Nhlapo is on the verge of winning a continental title

Nhlapo was on loan from Bidvest Wits to Highlands in the second half of last season. He spent a few weeks during pre-season with the Clever Boys before making a move to SuperSport United, who are looking to win the CAF Confederation Cup at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday (20h15).

Nhlapo joined SuperSport when they had already qualified for the quarterfinals of the competition, after they finished second in Group D.

Matsatsantsa were beaten 2-1 in the first leg of the final in Lubumbashi on Sunday. A 1-0 victory would be enough to win them the title.

“If we win it will be the biggest achievement in my career, without a doubt. In the teams I played for we never made it to the group stages. When I got here, 70 percent of the job had been done and there was still 30 percent more to do and if I am part of that 30 percent I can’t ask for more.”

Nhlapo stressed the importance of keeping a clean sheet when they face Mazembe.

“We need to play this 90 minutes and make sure we do not lose. We have played harder games, so we need to make sure that we do not concede.

“In this tournament you can’t concede. We saw that with Sundowns [in the Champions League final last year]. They did not concede at home. So we need to score and not concede.”

Nhlapo recently fought his way into the starting line-up ahead of Grant Kekana and is likely to start again when they host the defending champions on Saturday.
