Matsatsantsa were presented with a good opportunity to lift the trophy on home soil when they went into the second leg 2-1 down against DRC giants TP Mazembe at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.
All they needed to do was score a goal and not concede, but Eric Tinkler’s men were not their usual destructive selves going forward and the game finished 0-0. That was enough for Mazembe to win their second Confederation Cup title in as many years, while SuperSport pondered on what could have been.
After the match, Brockie said it hurts to miss out on the continental title.
“It’s been a long journey, travelled all around Africa. It’s been an amazing experience and to get so close but so far hurts,” said the lethal striker, who was taken off in the second half after having a quiet game.
“They are a well-structured side. They have some experienced players at the back and they did not give us too many opportunities to get a sniff at goal. It’s disappointing that we did not have a little bit more composure in the final third.
“We needed to play with more tempo at times. We could have penetrated more.”
SuperSport will be looking to bounce back when they take on Ajax Cape Town in the Absa Premiership at Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday (19h30).
Matsatsantsa are in 13th place on the standings, nine points behind log leaders Baroka FC. They have seven matches in hand, so they will be looking to close the gap and put themselves in a good position to win the title.
Tinkler is likely to make changes to the side that played against Mazembe, as he gives some of his players a rest while others get a chance to impress.
