Mamelodi Sundowns face Orlando Pirates challenge

The PSL champions have arrived in Ghana for their play-off round second leg match against Medeama SC on Wednesday, leading 3-1 from the first leg in Tshwane

Sundowns have arrived in the West African country in high spirits, with coach Pitso Mosimane confident that they will be able to impose themselves and come out aggregate winners, despite praising Medeama for having quality in their team.

However, the real test facing Sundowns is that the group stage matches of the Confederation Cup start on the weekend of June 17-19.

The Brazilians play their last match in domestic football this weekend, which means they will have under a month between the match against Platinum Stars and their opening group stage encounter.

This could mean a break of just two weeks for the players, who will have to be back at Chloorkop as soon as the beginning of June in preparation for the group stages.

The continent’s second-tier competition group matches will run up to the weekend of August 23-24.

Fellow PSL campaigners Orlando Pirates have had to deal with a similar challenge through all the years they have reached the group stages of continental club football – and it often took its toll on their domestic campaign.
