Eric Tinkler makes CAF history with SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates

As his head coaching career – which only got going in 2014 – continues to rise at an amazing rate Tinkler will lead SuperSport into the CAF Confederation Cup final against TP Mazembe, with the first leg being played on Sunday in Lubumbashi.

The second leg is scheduled for November 25 at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Just two years ago Tinkler was again in the final of this very same competition with Orlando Pirates, who were unfortunate to finish as runners-up to Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia.

The only other coach who has been in two finals with a South African club is Pitso Mosimane who won the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns last year before lifting the Super Cup in February.

All other coaches that have been in CAF club competitions finals with South African clubs have done it once, with Joe Frickleton, Ronald Mkandawire, Ted Dumitru, Roger de Sa, Muhsin Ertugral and Viktor Bondarenko on that list.

Also worth noting for Tinkler is that he has had a remarkable run as a head coach, reaching the final of the Nedbank Cup with Pirates in his only full campaign in charge at the club.

Last season he guided Cape Town City to success in the Telkom Knockout as they finished third in the league.

Since taking over at Matsatsantsa at the beginning of July he has also won the MTN8.

Tinkler (47) was also an assistant coach to De Sa at Pirates when they reached the final of the 2013 CAF Champions League.
