The Nigerian outfit kept the Clever Boys at bay as they played out to a 1-1 stalemate in their first-leg second round play-off clash at the Bidvest Stadium on Friday evening.
Wits opened the scoring in the third minute before the visitors restored parity less than 10 minutes later, but it was one-way traffic from there on out as the home side were thwarted by former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Fatau Dauda.
The Ghanaian international pulled off some fine stops to deny the likes of Eleazar Rodgers, Thobani Mncwango, Sifiso Myeni and Reeve Frosler and Enyimba looked to sit back and settle for the draw, with time-wasting tactics employed throughout the second half.
Aigbogun, however, was impressed with how his charges managed to stifle Wits as he admitted their content at taking home a draw and away goal for the return leg next week.
“I want to give thanks to God for the draw, and we’re happy with the result for now,” said Aigbogun after the match.
“The main thing is that you don’t lose when you come away in this competition, and if you score a goal then it’s an added bonus. So, getting that goal was very important.
“They [Wits] are a good team, and we knew they are going to be a good team. We’re going to have to step up in the second leg as well.”
Gavin Hunt’s side will have to pull out all the stops on their trip to Nigeria, where they are expected to face hostile conditions, if they have any hopes of reaching the continental cup's group stages for the first time in the club’s history.
