Wits put out a subdued performance in their CAF Confederation Cup play-off tie against Enyimba at the Bidvest Stadium on Friday night, but still looked a better side than their opponents.
The hosts wasted chance after chance, as former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Fatau Dauda pulled off some decent stops to deny the likes of Eleazar Rodgers, Reeve Frosler and Thobani Mncwango.
Hunt admitted the 1-1 scoreline was not a true reflection of the game, but lamented the lack of quality his side showed on the night.
“There was nothing in the game, it was so one-sided. But that’s been the story of our season, it’s disappointing because we could’ve been out of sight,” said Hunt after the match.
“If we can’t beat a side like that then you’ll never beat anybody, will you? I mean, it’s unbelievable but that’s where we are. We don’t have enough quality.”
The Clever Boys grabbed the lead through a cool finish at the far-post from Daine Klate three minutes in, and conceded the equaliser within five minutes after a defensive lapse of their own.
Hunt wasn’t overly concerned with the goal conceded but instead bemoaned the way his charges squandered chance after chance, and was especially critical of his fringe players.
“Ja, then you miss absolute tap-ins and sitters, and we don’t dominate the game like we should. Obviously, we’re playing a third-strength side, aren’t we?” he added.
“It’s not our first side, we don’t have enough players. But the players who haven’t played don’t show [up], do they? So, that’s disappointing.”
Having been eliminated from the CAF Champions League following a penalty shootout defeat to Angolan outfit 1er Augusto, Hunt feels Wits have yet to be undone by a side that has outplayed them on the continent.
“I think it’s been the story of our Champions League. I don’t think we’ve met anybody in the Champions League that’s [better than us], and we just haven’t won the games or turned them over,” he further pointed out.
“I think it’s because we lack [quality], but we’ve been better than everyone and we just haven’t won. So, I can’t stand here and start making excuses. We’re just not good enough. If we can’t beat sides like that, Jesus…”
