Andre Arendse backs SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams

Williams made two errors which led to goals in Matsatsantsa’s 2-1 defeat to the defending champions in Lubumbashi on Sunday, but Arendse says he does not doubt the quality of the Bafana Bafana shot-stopper.

“Ronwen would have been disappointed with his performance and he would be the first to say ‘I could have done better’. But that does not take away the quality Ronwen has and those are things we keep working on because we believe it’s not about individual players but about our department. We create a degree of competition for places and that must never change.”

Williams, however, is a doubt for the return leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium (20h15) on Saturday as he is nursing an ankle problem picked up while on senior national team duty recently. The 25-year-old was not training when Matsatsantsa hosted a media open day in Sunninghill, Johannesburg, on Wednesday morning.

If Williams does not recover in time for Saturday’s game, Reyaad Pieterse will be called up and junior international Mondli Mpoto will sit on the bench.
