The Capetonians saw off Swazi outfit Young Buffaloes 2-0 on aggregate to pass their first test in continental football, thereby progressing to the first round qualifiers.
The Citizens have been in indifferent form of late: following an impressive start to the season, they now sit sixth in the Absa Premiership following four successive league losses in February, finally breaking their losing streak in their last encounter, a 2-0 victory over Chippa United on Friday.
In 12 games since the turn of the year, City have won six, lost five and drawn the other.
City will be without head coach Benni McCarthy for the clash, with the 40-year-old in Europe as he looks to complete his Uefa Pro coaching licence, with assistant Vasili Manousakis taking charge. The club have opted to leave star trio Teko Modise, Roland Putsche and Thami Mkhize at home, while injured quartet Masoud Juma, Alan Kateregga, Mpho Matsi and Matthew Rusike also did not travel with the team.
Costa do Sol, meanwhile, only began their new season at the start of the month, and have played just three competitive matches since October last year.
They drew their league opener 0-0 against local rivals Maxaquene, which came off the back of a 2-0 aggregate win over Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy in the Confederation Cup preliminary round.
Costa, who were founded in 1955, have won the Mozambican top-flight on nine occasions, their last being in 2007, and qualified for this year’s CAF Confederation Cup after finishing as runners up in the league last year.
The 12-time domestic cup victors have only once before featured in the CAF Confederation Cup, reaching the first round qualifiers in 2010, while their best finish in five Champions League appearances was their group stage exit in 2002.
Tonight’s first round qualifier takes place at the 42 000-seater Estádio Nacional do Zimpeto in Maputo, with kick-off set for 19h00.
