William Shongwe positive on Kaizer Chiefs' CAF Champions League chances

Football commentator and Kaizer Chiefs legend William Shongwe has allayed fears that the team might be out of its depth already in the CAF Champions League.

Amakhosi came away with a disappointing single point from their opening group stage match against Horoya at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, thus not striking confidence into their supporters.

Chiefs have been struggling all season and do not look like a team capable of challenging for silverware, especially on the continent as they are inexperienced in modern African competitions.

But Shongwe says it is not all doom and gloom for Chiefs, who were the first South African club to play in the competition in 1993 when it was still the African Champions Cup.

"Look, it's not a bad start but this being the first game of the group stage you can drop points in the beginning and pick up as you go along," Shongwe tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"So they've got that maybe in their favour. So we cannot write them off just because they lost [point] their first game. This game also goes with experience, the more you play the more you get used to the travels, you start to plan better, it improves.

"So no panic button for now. Sometimes games like these become easier for the travelling team because their focus is one, defend. So you might find that even themselves [Horoya] they are going to struggle when they get home because now they'll be expected to come out and try to play.

"But can they play? That is where the true ability of a team can get in. It's harder for the home side because they have to do all the attacking, which leaves them open sometimes because there's a risk factor which you don't want to expose yourself to.

"Teams are still going to lose games, so Chiefs are far from being written off just because they drew this game. It's not the best start but it's not all lost."

Also in Group C of the CAF Champions League with Chiefs are Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca and Angolan giants Petro de Luanda, whom they face on 28 February and 6 March respectively.
