SuperSport explain CAF TV rights issue again, Mlungisi Ngubane not happy

A few rounds into this year's continental competitions fans of Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have received no coverage in South Africa due to the broadcast rights issue between CAF and SuperSport.

The pay TV corporate lost the deal they had with the previous rights owners Lagardere after CAF cancelled their arrangement with the agency in 2019.

However, as of today there appears to be no further progress in acquiring those rights again.

"SuperSport previously had rights to CAF content through an agency," explains SuperSport's senior communications manager Clinton van Der Berg without going into more detail.

"That agency was cancelled by CAF, which automatically terminated SuperSport's rights. We have not entered into further agreements since this cancellation and do not currently have rights to CAF events."

Nevertheless, South African soccer legend Mlungisi Ngubane is not happy with the way DStv has been handling the issue.

The former Bush Bucks and AmaZulu star is accusing the broadcaster of treating African football like a stepchild compared to other sporting codes such as rugby.

'Professor' insists SuperSport have no excuse not to pay whoever is the new custodian of the broadcasting rights as they continue to pursue the rights of European leagues such as EPL, Serie A and Bundesliga.

Ngubane tells snl24.com/kickoff he is speaking for the voiceless masses who continue paying the ever-increasing DStv subscription prices.

"Awu! Awu! Awu! Hey! Hey! Hey! That is something that will never happen with rugby!" says Ngubane, who reflects the passion of all local football supporters.

"Everything in the country would be brought to a standstill. Even our state president won't be working on that day. He would be locked in negotiations trying to fix the issue.

"But now because it's Bafana, no, it's nothing. Kaizer Chiefs were playing a very important game. Sundowns they were playing a very important game. Pirates the other day were playing a very important match. But we can't see them.

"Now as I'm speaking to you I'm on my way to pay the R950 subscription for DStv. Nine hundred and fifty. Now as I'm driving I'm on my way to pay [a few days ago]. Nine hundred and fifty. DStv. They can't tell us they don't have money to pay whoever owns the broadcasting rights currently."

At the moment the only way to watch CAF matches is to hope Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns individually manage to secure an online live feed on the day to share with media and fans.
