Pitso Mosimane assesses Mauricio Affonso's Mamelodi Sundowns debut

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has assessed the goalscoring debut performance of his new striker over the weekend.

Uruguayan off-season signing Mauricio Affonso finally made his long-awaiting debut for The Brazilians in their 11-1 CAF Champions League win over Cote d'Or on Friday.

Affonso started in great style, scoring with his first touch after coming on as a substitute at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Mosimane was delighted to get the first glimpse of his towering targetman after his debut was delayed by an ankle injury.

"I am happy he scored. It was good for him to score," said Mosimane after the match.

"He could have played more minutes but also we have to give other guys confidence like Vila [Sibusiso Vilakazi]. He [Vila] missed his first two easy chances but he made sure he corrected it and scored three.

"Affonso is not yet ready and let's not look at this game, it was only to give him a run."

Even after spending just a few minutes on the pitch, Affonso showed a few signs of his quality with the way he held up the ball upfront and turned to face defenders.

"You saw the goal he scored. The guy is strong aerially, that's why we signed him. We signed him specifically for the Champions League," Mosimane explained.

"If he was ready he could have helped us against SuperSport United [in the MTN8] with aerial balls. But that's gone, we have other things to achieve now."
