Patrice Carteron on Mamelodi Sundowns chances against Al Ahly in CAF Champions League QF

Sundowns inflicted the heaviest defeat in Al Ahly CAF competition history when they thrashed them 5-0 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium at the same stage of the competition 12 months ago.

However, the Egyptian Premier League champions have since invested heavily into their playing squad and boast a perfect league record coming into the quarter-final tie.

And Carteron suggests that the mental scars from the historic afternoon in Attrigeville is likely to motivate the Red Devils further for the two-legged clash which starts in Cairo on Saturday.

"I think in the game against Al Ahly, I don't think their 5-0 win last year can be an advantage because Al Ahly seems to be stronger this season," Carteron tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"They have a very, very good team and also it can be kind of revenge against Mamelodi Sundowns, they know the team better now."

The Frenchman, who lifted the CAF Super Cup and Egyptian Super Cup over the past two weeks went on to suggest that there are no clear favourites for the title.

The 2019/20 campaign has presented a last-eight comprising of eight former champions, for the first time in the history of the competition, which Carteron duly notes as a major factor to his opinion.

"I think it's 50-50, the full quarter-finals, all the teams have the chance 50-50 and for me, it's the same with Al Ahly and Sundowns," the former Ahly manager explains.

"Mamelodi Sundowns have their chance, but honestly, to me, any of the eight teams can win the competition this year."

He added: "It's really fantastic competition because for the first time all the teams involved have won the Champions League at least one time.

"TP Mazembe can win, Al Ahly can win, Sundowns also have a chance, but it's really hard to know who will win this competition."

Sundowns and Ahly meet in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at the Cairo International Stadium at 18h00 on Saturday.
