Kaizer Chiefs' Samir Nurkovic applauds VAR after goal against Wydad

Nurkovic's first half strike was initially ruled as having been scored from an offside position by the assistant referee but, with the use of the video assistant referee, the decision was overturned and the goal stood to give Chiefs' an all-important 1-0 aggregate lead in their CAF Champions League semi-final.

It was the first time that Chiefs were playing in a game where VAR was being used, with CAF instituting the use of video technology from the semi-final stage of the competition.

"It is important, because there is going to be less cheating. If it wasn't important then none of the biggest leagues in the world would be using it, so I am really happy to have contributed to this victory and it was a really good team effort," Nurkovic reacted after the historic victory in Casablanca on Saturday evening.

Chiefs will face the Moroccans in the second leg at FNB Stadium this Saturday at 18h00, and the Serbian forward has urged his teammates to maintain the same fighting spirit as they seek to reach the final for the first time.

"We just have to continue with the same fighting spirit. It was a great team effort, and I was really happy to have contributed to the victory, but we can't still be celebrating because it is only half-time," he added.

"Next week we are playing them at home, where we must make sure we win that game as well. It was a good effort from everyone in the team and we have to continue with the same fighting spirit."

Nurkovic has scored just six goals this season but that strike at the weekend carries so much weight that it might be the goal that ultimately takes Chiefs to their maiden continental final.
