Kaizer Chiefs respond to 10 out-of-contract players issue for CAF Champions League final

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has responded to the issue of players whose contracts expire before the CAF Champions League final scheduled for next month.

Chiefs secured their spot in the final on Saturday after a 1-0 aggregate win over Wydad AC which sets them up for a historic once-off encounter against Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly.

But with a host of first-team players out of contract as of 30 June, Chiefs could face an issue as new signings are unable to be registered for the game which falls under the 2020/21 African Champions League season.

"To be quite honest, we didn't discuss that, the focus was more on this semi-final, so the management will deal with that when the time is right," Zwane said.

"So now it's about going back to the drawing board and planning thoroughly for the final. Obviously, that will be part of the planning, in terms of the players' contracts that are about to expire."

It's uncertain whether some of the high-profile players have contract extension options which the club could activate.

Itumeleng Khune and Khama Billiat are believed to have seen their options taken up but the club have yet to make any formal communication on the duo.

Amakhosi are scheduled to face the record nine-time African champions at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca on 17 July.
