Kaizer Chiefs: COSAFA region record in CAF Champions League

While this year will be the 57th edition of the CAF Champions League, it will only be the seventh featuring a club from Southern Africa in the final.

Kaizer Chiefs are preparing to contest their first ever final of the premier continental club competition against Egyptian giants and nine-time winners Al Ahly.

The two sides will face off in the once-off cup decider at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco this Saturday evening at 21h00 (SA time).

Through North Africa's dominance, the region has won the tournament 32 times among the four major nations – Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.

For Amakhosi, representing Southern Africa, they will be hoping to bring the gong South for only the third time – the first in six years – in the region's seventh final appearance.

Zambian outfit Nkana FC were the first-ever Southern African club to reach the final of the Champions League in 1990, but were second best to Algeria's JS Kabyile.

Orlando Pirates then brought joy to the COSAFA region when they became the first club to lift the trophy, after getting the better of ASEC Mimosas from Ivory Coast in 1995.

Three years later, Zimbabwean giants Dynamos powered their way into the final but were runners-up to ASEC.

Mamelodi Sundowns also took silver in 2001, as was the case for Pirates in 2013 after both played draws in the first legs at home before suffering defeat away to Al Ahly.

Five years ago, Sundowns made sure they don't make the mistake of not winning at home as they emerged 3-0 winners in the first leg before holding on to only suffer a 1-0 defeat in Egypt against Zamalek.
