Sithole was at Chiefs the last time the club won a CAF competition – the Cup Winners Cup – and started in that crucial second leg played at Ellis Park on December 1, 2001 against InterClube from Angola.
Twenty years on, the thrills from that final which came during the 'Operation Vat Alles' days still sends shivers down his spine as he encourages the current crop to go for another continental title.
"In as much as Chiefs will be playing against the favourites Al Ahly and they will be underdogs, I still believe they can win this trophy," Sithole tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"I wouldn't be surprised at all if Chiefs win this trophy. One thing that I know about Chiefs is that where there is money, they stand up and perform. If you put something to compete for then Chiefs will rise.
"The mentality cultivated at Chiefs is all about achievements and breaking records, and this is one huge opportunity for that to happen. So, that is why I wouldn't be surprised if Chiefs win this trophy. They haven't come this far by chance and will be in this final to win it.
"If I were a gambler, I would have honestly put my bet on Chiefs because I know there is money to be made there. We can analyse football all we like, but what I know is that what matters is what happens on the day of the match.
"Chiefs need to make up for the disappointment of not winning trophies in recent years, and what better way to do it by winning the one that they have never won before, which is the biggest on the continent. Chiefs need this trophy more than Al Ahly.
"I get thrills thinking about how wonderful the experience was of travelling the continent so that you get to measure yourself against the rest of the teams, and the benefits which came with it. They do it in Europe and celebrate it, so why should we not do the same on our continent?"
The Cup Winners Cup was the third trophy Chiefs won within three months, after landing the BP Top Eight and Coca-Cola Cup back in 2001/02.
