Junior Khanye warns Kaizer Chiefs over squad overhaul

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye has warned the club not to let their good run in the CAF Champions League paint a false picture of their problems.

Chiefs have one foot in the Champions League final following their impressive 1-0 win over Morrocan giants Wydad Casablanca at the weekend.

The Glamour Boys have been flying the South African flag high in a historic continental campaign which has seen them continuously smash expectations despite a poor history in the competition.

However, Khanye feels despite their dream run, Amakhosi should not abandon their plans to overhaul the squad ahead of the 2021/22 season.

"Look my brother, since Arthur Zwane has taken over, there's a difference in approach in their game," Khanye tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"Approaching the game with four people at the back, I think he did good a thing but their team is still not balanced. They need to get players – a right-back and left-back; they need three quality defensive midfielders that are at the right age.

"I'm talking about the likes of [Sipho] Mbule, Teboho Mokoena, and they need to get wingers [because] their attack is not balanced, although their defence has done wonders. "They are not playing well, we need to be honest, and once I'm proved right they must not call me a genius, please. They must take it back.

"Defensively, Arthur has done well, though I have a problem with his full-backs – Zulu and Frosler. They are always getting exposed man, eish! At the weekend they were fortunate.

"Centre-backs, they don't need much, only if they can get this boy Ngcobo [Njabulo, from Swallows FC]. But the question is, is he going to suit the style of play of the coach that is there?

"They must get rid of many players, my brother. They mustn't read too much into their recent wins, they are not convincing. But, make no mistake, they've made history in the Champions League.

"But remember, them not being able to sign players had nothing to do with their form last season, it is not a new thing, they've not been doing well for the last six years.

"The other five years, they've been signing players but those players couldn't do anything. Some of the players there even played under Steve [Komphela], Ernst [Middendorp] and Gavin [Hunt].

"Yes, I believe these were not Kaizer Chiefs' type of coaches but the players are also to blame. If they wanna compete next season, they must get quality players.

"But the question is, the coach that is there now, how is he going to approach the games? I won't be mentioning names of players they must let go, but they need to build the team around players like [Itumeleng] Khune, Khama Billiat, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo."
