How Mamelodi Sundowns ended TP Mazembe's unbeaten run in CAF Champions League

The Brazilians broke the Congolese giants' incredible record of more than 11 years unbeaten at home in the Champions League as Mazembe had last tasted defeat when they were beaten 2-0 by Al Hilal way back in October 2009.

Sundowns defied all the odds to register a 2-1 win away from home against the African powerhouse to take a big step closer to qualifying for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.

The South African team was greeted with huge applause from Congolese fans outside Stade TP Mazembe as they headed back to their hotel after the match.

Mngqithi believes the absence of fans inside the stadium also played a role in helping his team beat their usually intimidating hosts.

"First, one should thank the Covid-19 because with your supporters, it's always different. When the stadium is full, you always give a very good account of yourself," Mngqithi told the Congolese media after the match.

"I must also not take the credit away from the team. I think we were prepared for this encounter. We knew we are playing against a very good team but our confidence is very high.

"I think we have played probably 23 games, we have not lost a match this season which is also a very good account of the team and the way we are preparing the team. The boys fought hard. There were circumstances within the game that were difficult for the boys.

"Also I would like to know whether the goal we scored in the first half was not a goal because I think we scored a goal in the first half. I don't know the reason it didn't count because in my mind we scored three goals today," he added.

The Brazilians now have nine points after three matches, while all their opponents in Group B have two points apiece.

Sundowns are set to return to domestic football when they host Polokwane City in the Nedbank Cup in Tshwane on Wednesday.
